To prepare/cook fresh butternut squash, follow these steps:

1. Clean the squash by washing, peeling, and removing the seeds.
2. Cut into cubes of 2-3" in size.
3. Place in a pot with distilled water and cover.
4. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to allow the squash to finish cooking.
5. Check for softness throughout the squash with a fork or knife.
6. Remove the squash from the heat, filter the water, but save 1-2 cups (depending on amount you cooked - the ending consistency should be like mashed potato, not soupy).
7. Puree the squash with water in a blender.
8. Keep refrigerated for up to 4-5 days.

Feed your constipated carnivore some pumpkin puree every day until he or she feels better; blend it into meals or serve it as a side dish between or with meals. Keep an eye out for symptoms including vomiting, squeezing, wailing, and unpleasant bowel movements. It's time to take the small one to the veterinarian for additional evaluation if defecation doesn't happen in a couple of days
